Drifless Area

The "Driftless Area" is home to the best troutfishing in the Midwest!

This is an area of rugged topography characterized by steep slopes and cliffs, prominent bluffs, and meandering streams.

Areas of southeast Minnesota, southwest Wisconsin, and northeast Iowa are home to one of the largest collections of freshwater springs in the United States.

Brook Trout

The Root River watershed in southeast Minnesota supports thousands of wild brown trout. Many of the streams make ideal habitat as they flow from caves that keep the waters at a temperature of 47 degrees.

In southwest Wisconsin, the highest densities of wild trout are found in the Kinnickinnic River. Anglers who are after large browns fish the gorge below River Falls.
French Creek in northeast Iowa is another area for anglers to visit if they are after wild brown trout.
